Books For Ages 4-7

Here are some quality books for children right on the cusp of reading. They may recognize quite a few words and be able to decode them. But read these to your child instead of making them struggle to read them for themselves. They really enjoy listening to a great story unfold, and they really enjoy looking at great illustrations as they listen.

These would make great library check-outs for summer reading, or wonderful birthday or holiday gifts for an older preschooler through about Grade 2:

Amazing Grace, Mary Hoffman and Caroline Binch

Annie and the Wild Animals, Jan Brett

            Archibald Frisby, Michael Chesworth

            Chester's Way, Kevin Henkes

            Emily, Michael Bedard

If You Were A Writer, Joan Lowrey Nixon

            Miss Rumphius, Barbara Cooney

            Peppe the Lamplighter, Elisa Bartone

Rachel Parker, Kindergarten Show-off, by Ann Martin

Sayonara, Mrs. Kackelman, by Maira Kalman

Swamp Angel, Anne Isaacs, ill. Paul O. Zelinsky

Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt, Deborah Hopkinson

            Trouble With Trolls, Jan Brett
