Today's Snack: Here's a snack that's a lot like nuts, and you'll go nuts over how much nutrition is in these little beans. They're baby soybeans, called "edamames." That's a Japanese word for "beans on twigs." When they harvest these little pods at the height of ripening, they flash-freeze them to keep them fresh. So you'll find them in the freezer section of a big supermarket or a health-food store. You wil have to boil the pods a little in salted water; follow package directions. Let cool a little, and have fun eating them: you just strip out the beans from the pods with your teeth! Edamames are high-protein, fiber-rich, relatively low-calorie, and have ots of minerals and omega-3 fatty acids. Today's After School Treat is talking about 50 books. Well, you can have 50 edamames, and you'll be refreshed enough to read a whole stack of books!
