'You Go, I Go, Repeat'
Game
Today's
Snack: This
activity is all about taking turns while reading. So why not take turns while
eating your snack? Make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and pour a glass of
milk. First, take a bite of the sandwich, and chew and swallow. Then, take a
drink of milk. Then take another bite of the sandwich. Try to have a sip of
milk left to wash down your last bite of the sandwich.

Book Buddies, paired up
Let's play "You Go, I Go, Repeat." It's a fun
reading game that will build listening skills as well as decoding skills at the
same time.
Choose a picture book that is fairly short, but
has at least two sentences per page.
Get with a Book Buddy - either your
regularly-assigned one, or just someone else to pair up with for this activity.
Sit close together so you can both see the words on both pages at all times.
It's OK to trace the sentence with your finger when it's your turn so that you
can keep your place, but you don't have to.
Now just read the book taking turns reading
aloud each sentence. If you read the first sentence of the book, your Book
Buddy should read the next sentence. Then YOU read the NEXT one. And on you go,
to the end of the book.
After taking turns all that time, it should
come naturally to you to take turns asking one question each at the end of the
book. You might ask your Book Buddy, "Who was your favorite character in the
book, and why?" Your Book Buddy might ask you, "How else could this story have
ended?"
This activity is so good for readers, because
you are listening to your Book Buddy read aloud at the same time that you are
looking at those words on the page. So you have to listen WHILE you mentally
decode. That's great practice!
You might have so much fun that you'll decide
to play this game again and again! You also can volunteer to read aloud, taking
turns, for the whole group, if you and your Book Buddy would like, and there's
time.
Just remember . . . everybody has more fun when
everybody takes turns!
