Here's a fun craft project for a Book Buddy
(reading mentor) or a mom or dad to do with a child. Let's make a Book Bug! Then
the child can use it to "bug" someone to read him or her a story! It's a great
way to get the "bug" of regular read-alouds at home, so important for every
child's reading progress.
Every time the child wants to be read to, he or
she can place the book bug where the reading mentor or parent will see it. Then
they can enjoy the fun of reading together.
Let the child experiment with making
wings out of pipe cleaners and plastic wrap . . . a nose out of a small pompom
. . . decorations such as beads or polka dots made of glitter glue . . .
whatever the child loves.
A teen or adult should handle the
hot-glue gun tasks, because it is so easy to burn little hands.
If you're the Book Buddy, suggest
that the child take the Book Bug home and use it as a signal to the parent that
it's storytime. It's a fun tradition to share with grandparents, babysitters,
older siblings, and everybody else who might enjoy a read-aloud time with a
child who's turning into a book bug, too!
