Reading: Book Buddies

Curious George's Newspaper Boat

Today's Snack: Cut a lemon in half, lengthwise. See if it will float in a bowl of water. Now fill with a blob or two of lemon yogurt. See? It's a lemon boat! Now pick up your boat and eat the yogurt with a spoon, and finish the rest of the yogurt container, too. It's great with a graham cracker and a glass of juice.

Today's Supplies:

Curious George Rides a Bike | a section or two of old newspaper

Coming up with an extension activity to bring out the meaning in a book is a great way to help a child enjoy the story and remember the message.

For this fun activity, simply read aloud the beloved Curious George Rides a Bike book to the child. Author: H.A. Rey. Note that there's a whole series of Curious George books, and they're great for a fund read and some exposure to problem-solving, too. Talk about the meaning of this story, and your favorite parts, with your Book Buddy.

Now turn to the page in the book where it shows you how to fold newspaper into a boat just like Curious George did. Maybe the adult or Book Buddy can make one to show the child how to make another. This will be good practice in following instructions, as the folds are a little bit challenging. But if George can do it, you can, too!

You can attach a long string to your boats if you're going to float them in a pond or stream, and don't want them to sail away. But a kiddie wading pool or even a bathtub is a fun "run" for these boats, too. You'll be surprised how long they will float without getting waterlogged. That Curious George was a pretty smart little monkey, and now you will be, too!
